Blog Deep Dive with Sherlock Holmes, Fairies, and the Devil Baby of Hull House

 

1. Conan Doyle failed in many ways when doing this investigation about whether the fairy pictures were real, concluding that fairies are real and not just fictional. The biggest mistake is that he sent another detective to the girls, and this man was a believer of fairies, so of course he is going to want to see these pictures as real life. His second biggest mistake was trusting these two girls too much, and they took advantage of him. He should have been more skeptical about their capabilities and not believe them right away. 

2. What Jane noticed about all of the women coming to Hull House was that they all were grieving and were having a hard time living their lives, and they hoped that this devil baby would give them some sort of reassurance that would explain why their life was the way it was. When looking at “Sir Arthur and the Fairies” and “The Devil Baby of Hull House” you see examples of people who are grieving and have suffered loss who want to believe in things that might explain their lives better. Another way to explain that would be that these people believing in spiritual things, will give them a sense of comfort and help them cope better with their trauma. Conan Doyal lost his son and brother, which made him turn to spiritualism, while many women that visited the Hull House had also experienced loss. 

3. I do agree with Conan Doyle in the way that there are many phenomenons and events that happen in this world that cannot be backed up by science, and this makes it harder for people to believe in. However, science has evolved which makes it easier to explain certain events now compared to the resources they had hundreds of years ago. Top examples that are still beyond science include the creation of the universe, life after death, and paranormal phenomena. 

4. Something that everyone is curious about right now are aliens. While there is no specific evidence to their existence, there are multiple arguments that you can make to assume that aliens are real. I am going to focus on the main argument, one that everyone is aware about and that is how there have been many UPA’S (AKA UFO’s) spotted around the country recently. These aircrafts have been spotted flying in non-airplane-like movements and  vanishing suspiciously quickly. Pilots who have encountered these aircrafts claim that they are unmarked and do not show up on their raiders. Ryan Graves, a former Navy pilot, states that he had an encounter with one of these unidentified objects and that these encounters were extremely common among pilots (Whiteside with News Nation Now). Overall, there is no distinct evidence that aliens truly exist, however, these UPA’s are a good starting point for investigations and how we can find our answer. Unfortunately, many think that the government may know this answer but are hiding it from the public. Hopefully with time we will come to find the real answer.
